THE TOP FIVE WAYS TO GET INSPIRED

2026

Inspiration is something that comes naturally for most, but knowing where to look in times where inspiration feels impossible, is a skill that Calgary artists are carrying around with them. But even artists with constant inspiration get stuck sometimes, so where should someone be looking to find that spark?

  1. Spend time in nature

Nature is the ultimate way to reset your mind, and connect with something in a less interactive way. Most times communication can put stress onto our bodies and ideas. Getting outside, and changing your surroundings can help to put your mind into a new state. There is an endless amount of things to look at outside, let yourself feel free, and become one with the beauty around.

“Nature has been a big part of my practice, and has allowed me to appreciate moments and sights through different lenses,” said Toula Parthenis.

“Looking at the way light casts shadows, or the feelings that take over when breathing in fresh air, focusing in on one aspect at a time has reminded me to slow down, and embrace each moment.”

  1. Include other people in your creative process

Your own opinion is always going to be the most valuable, but when it comes to art, the opinion from others can transform the way you achieve a finished art piece. Creating art for the sake of another person is the start of encouragement.

“Sometimes it’s nice to work for a client who has inspiration but not the means to bring it to life, because I can help bring their vision to life,” said Maddy Paul.

  1. Let your art have a meaning

Feeling stuck when creating a piece of work is almost inevitable, when this happens it’s a good idea to take a moment and reflect on what the purpose of your work was. This typically sparks not only  inspiration, but also a sense of motivation to see the end result. Remember how you felt when you first started.

“Sometimes I do feel stuck and I feel like I’m stuck in a loop or discouraged by comparing myself to other people in my field, but I remember how proud my younger self would be for taking my art this far and making something of it and that generally keeps me excited,” Paul said.

  1. Surround yourself with creativity

Creative spaces are often essential to feel inspired. Especially surrounding yourself with other artists, and seeing other artwork. Presenting yourself with the talent and work drive you strive for, is a key element to take you further on your creative journey.

I am always inspired by local talent and it is so amazing to be at quarts and see so many creative people,” said Paul.

“Everyone has such a different style but just being in a creative space with creative minded people is so refreshing and encouraging.”

  1. Let yourself explore, let it be a mess

One thing that is important is art, is to remember that there is not one specific line of rules to follow. It will always be full of creative decisions, and sometimes the best outcomes come from the messiest, and unorganized work process.

“ I have begun to embrace making a mess, trying new things, and focusing more so on the creative process than the outcomes,” said Parthenis.
